Brennen Carty, creator of An Unlikely Fandom recently came under fire for his relationship with controversial Twitter user, TheFattHatt.
While TheFattHatt’s involvement in fan projects is questionable at best and problematic at worst, we shouldn’t let his involvement with these projects sour our opinions on them. After all, there are many wonderful and talented people in this fandom who make 9/11 memes besides TheFattHatt, who don’t deserve to be associated with him simply because he makes 9/11 memes as well.
9/11 memes are a time honored tradition. Every year, millions of our fellow Americans celebrate the wondrous day when George Bush crashed two jets into the World Trade Center. These beautiful Americans have nothing to do with the bigoted and hateful things TheFattHatt has said, so we shouldn’t let our opinions on him sour our opinions on their memes.
So please, the next time you see someone share a 9/11 meme they worked hard on, don’t assume they agreed with or supported TheFattHatt. View that person as the wonderful and talented person they are as an individual.
